Nova Sylva’s team is working today to sustainably manage forest resources to ensure the well-being of future generations.

 

Marc Riopel

Marc Riopel

Marc Riopel graduated with a degree in Forest Resources Management from Laval University, Quebec, and became a Registered Professional Forester in 1990. He started his career monitoring silviculture activities for the Quebec Ministry of Energy and Resources. After working as a consultant for private industry in the Laurentides and Lanaudière regions, he joined the M.C. Forêt team in 1998. As Director of Forestry, Marc was responsible for the company’s planning team and silviculture activities, including tree marking and surveys. He also worked as the quality control coordinator. He contributed to the preparation of numerous forest management plans and was responsible for coordinating forest operations among the different licensees for two Forest Management Units. Since 2008, he was Vice-President as well as the coordinator of ISO certification for the company. He has been part of the consultation division of M.C. Forêt inc. since its inception – which is now known as Nova Sylva.

 

Éric Forget

Éric Forget

Éric Forget graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Forest Management and a Master’s degree in Science from Laval University. From 1995 until 1999, he worked as a silviculture forester for the British Columbia Forest Service. Upon returning to Quebec, he was Manager of a community forest in the Eastern Townships. In 2000, Eric joined the Institut québécois d’aménagement de la forêt feuillue (IQAFF), where he contributed to the field of applied silviculture with numerous scientific and technical reports on the effects of selection cutting, growth and yield, the effects of climate change on forests and the development of spatially explicit tools for forest planning. After serving as a member of the Board for the development of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Standard, he joined M.C. forêt and was responsible for implementing the FSC certification for several Forest Management Units. Éric Forget has successfully completed the training program for auditors offered by SmartWood and is member of the Ordre des ingénieurs forestiers du Québec.

 

Nicolas Legault

Holder of a bachelor’s degree in forest management and environments, he left Laval University in 2018 with an international experience in Sweden. During this exchange, he studied various forest policies and certifications used throughout the world. He began his career as an urban forestry consultant for the City of Kirkland, where he was responsible for the emerald ash borer management plan and for the maintenance of the urban canopy. Member of the Quebec Order of Forest Engineers since 2019, he joined Nova Sylva’s team the same year. With the consulting firm's team, he supports forestry companies in the management of their certifications. He is also actively involved in urban forestry, geomatics and UAV projects.

 

Samuel Perreault

Samuel graduated in forest management from the CFP Mont-Laurier in 2015. He started his career in commercial and non-commercial inventory and then became a hammerer. He joined our team in 2022 when he was the technical coordinator for commercial and non-commercial work. He follows up on logging operations, works in geomatics and flies drones for Nova Sylva. He is trained in MSCR classification.

 

 

 

Dylan Mcdowell

With a DEP in forest management and a DEP in protection and exploitation of wildlife territories, he joins the Nova Sylva team in 2021 as a forestry technician. He is responsible for the follow-up of forest operations and works as a scaler in several mills. He is trained in MSCR classification.

 

 

 

 

 

Jeanny Thivierge

She holds a Bachelor's degree in forest management and environments from Laval University since 2018. She joined the Order of Forest Engineers the same year and began her career in the monitoring of non-commercial work. She then worked for the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks in Abitibi-Témiscamingue until 2022, where she notably worked on wildlife management plans, protected areas and forest adaptation to climate change. At the same time, she undertook a master's degree in ecology at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. She joined the Nova Sylva team in 2023 and works on various projects, including impact studies.

 

Mathieu Vaillancourt

A 2005 graduate of Université Laval with a bachelor's degree in forest management and environments, Mathieu joins Nova Sylva in 2023. He brings to the team a wealth of experience as a forestry engineer. His experience in the Quebec industry includes forest planning, worksite supervision and mill supply. With the organization, Mathieu provides support to companies requiring the assistance of a forestry engineer, whether in geomatics or annual report writing. He also participates in the integration of planning into management units and field monitoring.

Dannick Bernèche

A 2015 graduate of the Centre de Formation Professionnel de Mont-Laurier with a DEP in forest management, Dannick is passionate about maple syrup production. In addition to supporting the region's maple syrup producers, he has worked for several years monitoring the quality of reforestation, bush clearing and site preparation work. With his MSCR training, he joins the Nova Sylva team in 2023, where he continues his work in forest management quality control.

 

Mathias Nolet

After working in the brewing industry for 7 years, Mathias decided to go back to school and complete a DEP in forest management at the CFP of Mont-Laurier. Graduating in July 2023, he began his career as a forestry technician with Nova Sylva. An avid outdoorsman, he quickly found his passion and motivation to work in forest management. He has MSCR training and a wood scaler's card.
